Nurse Practitioner, Post-partum (One-year Contract, 0.6-0.8 FTE negotiable)
Reporting to the Clinical Program Manager, and in combination with the Unit Manager – Hospital Obstetrics, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing support to post-partum patients of the Calgary West Central Primary Care Network (CWC PCN) at the Rockyview General Hospital. The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates autonomous and independent practice and is responsible and accountable for the provision of evidence-based maternal and infant or newborn care.
The Nurse Practitioner assesses, diagnoses, manages and supports patients and completes appropriate documentation. They work collaboratively with the physician to develop and implement care plans, evaluate outcomes and provide followup with the patient. The Nurse Practitioner maximizes the application of in-depth nursing theory, knowledge and skills to meet the complex healthcare needs of individuals, families and communities. They function as a nursing practice leader, consultant, expert practitioner, educator and researcher within the In-Hospital Obstetrics program.
The Nurse Practitioner makes professional autonomous decisions and works to full scope of practice with an emphasis on providing comprehensive care, education and guidance to perinatal patients, their families and their newborns. Duties will vary depending on the unit and patient population needs.
The Nurse Practitioner works with family physicians and obstetricians in hospitals and the community, other health professionals, and local and regional programming in a multidisciplinary environment to ensure a high quality of evidence-based expert clinical care to the practice population.
Based on the Alberta Health Services (AHS) definition of Professional Practice, the Nurse Practitioner will use critical thinking and clinical judgement to coordinate and facilitate the management of patients within the CWC PCN. Specifically, the Nurse Practitioner will use a case-management approach when assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient and care needs. The Nurse Practitioner will utilize the hospital EMR or paper chart in maintaining accurate and timely records, documenting all phases of patient care. Key responsibilities include:
- Work collaboratively within a hospital unit and with physicians to enhance the delivery of obstetrical care services.
- Follow practice protocol, perform and document a comprehensive history and in-depth assessment (including ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosis, etc.) of the health status, including physiological, psychosocial, economic, learning, cultural and spiritual factors affecting well-being and health.
- Initiate and implement management strategies and provide appropriate evaluation, followup, referrals and modifications to care plans.
- Integrate scientific theories and current research and evidence from nursing and allied healthcare professionals to identify and articulate the rationale for selecting interventions and in developing and implementing innovative approaches to support the health, learning and transition needs of the individual, family and community.
- Make professionally autonomous decisions in managing patients and offering a complementary source of care to that offered by medical practitioners.
- Assist in the implementation of strategies for improving the quality and provisions of care for the practice population.
- Assist in the delivery of disease management and health promotion programs and provide appropriate care and treatment, according to practice policy and protocols.
- Initiate appropriate investigations.
- Integrate multidisciplinary team and community resources into the care plan.
- In accordance with CWC PCN policies, procedures and established standards, employ expert consulting skills with nurses and other professionals in various clinical settings to directly and indirectly influence patient or client care.
- Contribute expert consultation to planning groups, health institutions, community groups, policymakers, leaders and education institutions related to healthcare system planning.
- Work with the Unit Manager – Hospital Obstetrics, Director of Clinical Services, in-hospital nurses and members of the PCN management team to implement the network’s nursing program vision, outcomes, operational plans, systems, policies, protocols and metrics.
- Participate in the identification of new service requirements and addressing deficiencies in current services.
- Assist the Obstetrics Physician Lead and Program Lead to modify programs and initiatives to take advantage of opportunities and protect them against external changes and support the consistent implementation of the nursing program’s operational plans to address requirements.
- Using research-based evidence and outcome data formulates, evaluate and revise policies, procedures, protocols, individualized care programs and standards for care for complex care issues.
- Meet with Obstetrics, physicians and other AHS nurses and supervisors to address issues of management, supervision, planning and administration.
- Use knowledge from clinical practice and assessment to build requisite knowledge and skills in nurses and healthcare team members necessary for providing quality care within the in-hospital program.
- Participate in program evaluation initiatives. Ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with practice policy.
- Offer the nursing perspective and participate in the development and implementation of clinical governance, which includes risk management and complaints handling.
- Develop nursing knowledge through the identification of researchable problems and potential projects and conduct and facilitate research studies in collaboration with experts as appropriate.
The ideal candidate is a Nurse Practitioner with a proven track record working with a primary care team to treat and manage patients efficiently and effectively.
Education: A Master of Nursing and Nursing Practitioner Certification is required. Current College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta practice permit in good standing with CPR and HCP BLS.
Functional knowledge: Demonstrated clinical skills in obstetrical nursing with evidence of continued professional development. Proven ability to build good working relationships with healthcare professionals, clients and other members of the community. Knowledge of and ability to use EMR. Demonstrates ability to use equipment and supplies according to established standards and procedures. Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience: Nursing experience in obstetrics in an acute care setting is an asset. Previous experience as a Nurse Practitioner in women’s health is preferred. Neonatal resuscitation and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation program required. Mentoring and/or teaching is an asset.
Organizational and problem-solving skills: Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Strong organizational skills. Proven ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a highly challenging environment.
Communications and customer relations skills: Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills; able to handle requests and complaints in a professional, non-confrontational manner. Ability to guide and instruct healthcare providers at various levels. Excellent followup and problem-solving skills with the ability to make intuitive decisions. Discretion and ability to handle sensitive information and material appropriately.
Background check: A clear Criminal Background check, inclusive of a vulnerable sector search, is required to start. If you have resided outside of Calgary in the past 12 months, you will need to contact the local police or RCMP detachment in your previous residential municipality to be able to obtain a full report.
Hours of work: This is a temporary position expected to end June 2020. While this is a part-time position with a 0.6 FTE (24 hours), the successful candidate may negotiate to work up to 0.8 FTE (32 hours).
